What A Surprise! Biden's $7.5 Billion Electric Vehicle Charging Plan Falls Short

Two years into President Biden's tenure, his administration's ambitious plan to construct 500,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the United States, funded by a $7.5 billion allocation from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, appears to be lagging.

Despite the grand promise, only a few projects are currently underway, and none have been completed.

The administration continues to advocate for its pro-EV agenda, even as it grapples with the challenges of infrastructure development. According to Fox News, a mere $101.5 million of the $5 billion designated for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program has been disbursed to a total of seven states.

Construction has commenced on only two projects, located in Columbus, Ohio, and Pittston, Pennsylvania. The remaining recipient states, including Hawaii, Maine, Colorado, Alaska, and Kentucky, have yet to initiate construction. An additional 17 states are still in the proposal and application phase, suggesting that their charging stations may not materialize for several years.

Despite the apparent slow progress, Biden administration representatives maintain that significant strides have been made in enhancing the country's EV network. "Since the President took office there has been a 70 percent increase in charging ports now in place, and as states move quickly and deliberately to energize even more EV chargers stamped Made-in-the-USA, Americans can be confident that we are on track to meet our ambitious goals," a spokesperson for the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation told Fox News.

White House spokeswoman Robyn Patterson echoed this sentiment, asserting that the administration is "on track to build out a national network of 500,000 publicly accessible chargers by 2026 — fulfilling the President's campaign goal four years early."

Simultaneously, several states have proposed banning the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by the mid-2020s. While these initiatives have garnered some support, they have also sparked criticism from those who argue that EVs are not a viable option in certain regions of the country.
