In a recent development, Pramila Jayapal, the Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a Democratic representative from Washington, has come under fire from her Democratic colleagues.

The criticism stems from her alleged attempt to draw a moral equivalence between the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) and Hamas, particularly in light of reports of sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas terrorists against Israeli women.

During a television interview on Sunday, Jayapal was accused of downplaying the severity of the reported sexual violence.

In response to her comments, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democratic representative from Florida, took to social media, stating, "Hamas terrorists raped Israeli women and girls. The only ‘balanced’ approach is to condemn sexual violence loudly, forcefully and without exceptions. Outrageous for anyone to ‘both sides’ sexual violence."

The criticism comes in the wake of a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals, including men, women, and children. Reports of rape and brutal sexual assault have begun to emerge following the attack, raising concerns about the ongoing sexual violence against the Israelis still held hostage by Hamas.

When questioned about the silence of progressive women on the issue, Jayapal responded, "I mean, I don’t, I don’t know that that’s true. I think we always talk about the impact of war on women, in particular." She further added that she has consistently condemned Hamas since the October 7 attack.

However, Jayapal's comments did not end there. She went on to say, "We have to remember that Israel is a democracy.

That is why they are a strong ally of ours. And if they do not comply with international humanitarian law, they are bringing themselves to a place that makes it much more difficult strategically for them to be able to build the kinds of allies to keep public opinion with them. And frankly, morally, I think we cannot say that one war crime deserves another. That is not what international humanitarian law says."

When pressed further about the accusations of rape by Hamas against Israelis, Jayapal retorted, "I already answered your question." She then added, "I said it's horrific, and I think that rape is horrific. Sexual assault is horrific. I think that it happens in war situations. Terrorist organizations like Hamas, obviously are using these as tools."

Jayapal's comments were also met with criticism from Ritchie Torres, a Democratic representative from New York. Although he did not mention Jayapal by name, he stated, "Rape and sexual violence against Israeli women calls for nothing less than unequivocal condemnation."

Jayapal has been a prominent figure on the left, particularly on issues of sexual violence against women. In 2017, she was among the lawmakers who called for the resignation of then-Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, a fellow Democrat, over allegations of sexual assault. She has also spearheaded legislation aimed at ending forced arbitration for survivors.

Jayapal's comments on Sunday were also criticized by Christine Pelosi, the daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She wrote, "Do not minimize, excuse, ‘balance’ or ‘both sides’ sexual assault – that is victim blaming we have spent decades trying to undo in the laws, the courts and the hearts and minds of the people."
