A woman has lodged a legal action against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, alleging sexual assault and seeking a trial along with a minimum of $5 million in damages.

The summons was filed in Manhattan's state Supreme Court under the Adult Survivors Act, as reported by The Messenger.

The legal action implicates not only Adams but also the transit bureau of the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the NYPD's Guardian Association. The document states, "Plaintiff was sexually assaulted by Defendant Eric Adams in New York, New York in 1993 while they both worked for the City of New York."

The summons, spanning three pages, does not provide specific details about the alleged assault. In New York's civil court system, a plaintiff can initiate legal action by filing a summons and subsequently submit a comprehensive complaint detailing the claims.

In response to the allegations, a City Hall spokesperson stated that Adams does not recognize the plaintiff, adding, "If they ever met, he doesn’t recall it."

The Adult Survivors Act, which came into effect in New York state in November 2022, provides a one-year window for victims of sexual abuse to file lawsuits in state and federal courts for claims that would have otherwise been barred by the statute of limitations. This window closes on Friday, prompting a flurry of last-minute filings this week.

Notably, legal actions have also been filed against Axl Rose, the lead vocalist of Guns N’ Roses, actor Cuba Gooding Jr, comedian Bill Cosby, and rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs. The latter recently settled a lawsuit filed by his former girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, a day after it was lodged.

This development follows the seizure of Mayor Adams's mobile phones and iPad by the FBI as part of a probe into alleged campaign finance fraud. The FBI also executed a search warrant at the Brooklyn residence of Brianna Suggs, 25, Adams's campaign consultant and chief fundraiser. The search aimed to determine whether the campaign conspired with the Turkish government to accept unlawful foreign donations.
