Conservative commentator Candace Owens, who hosts a podcast for The Daily Wire, recently posted a series of cryptic messages on social media.

The posts, which consisted of Bible quotes about persecution and the worship of money, along with the statement "Christ is King," were seen by some as an antisemitic dog-whistle. Owens' posts came shortly after her employer, Ben Shapiro, criticized her response to the war in Gaza as "disgraceful."

The first post included a passage from the Gospel of Matthew (5:9-11) that spoke about the blessedness of peacemakers and those persecuted for righteousness' sake. Owens then quoted another section from the same Gospel (6:24), emphasizing the impossibility of serving both God and money. The second post simply stated, "Christ is King."

Shapiro responded to Owens' posts by suggesting that if she felt her work at The Daily Wire conflicted with her faith, she should quit. Owens fired back, accusing Shapiro of being unprofessional and emotionally unhinged, and expressing her intolerance for his interpretation of scripture.

Owens did not provide further explanation for her posts and remained silent on social media until the following day when she announced an upcoming interview with Tucker Carlson. Both Owens and Carlson have faced accusations of antisemitism in the past. Carlson, formerly the most-watched host on Fox News, is currently facing a lawsuit alleging a hostile workplace rife with antisemitism.

In 2019, Owens faced condemnation for a statement she made about Hitler, in which she attempted to distinguish between nationalism and imperialism. While she called Hitler a "homicidal, psychotic maniac" and rejected any endorsement of his actions, her remarks continue to be cited by her critics.

Both Owens and Carlson have been critical of the US's support for Israel since the recent conflict with Hamas. Carlson specifically criticized Republican lawmakers, including Lindsey Graham and Ron DeSantis, for their comments on the situation. Owens, on the other hand, wrote on social media that no country has the right to commit genocide, without specifically mentioning Israel. However, given the timing and social context, many made the connection.

Owens engaged in a debate with comedian Ami Kozak, who took issue with her views on Israel. The debate gained attention outside of Owens' audience, with Kozak clarifying that the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem is not a community where Muslims are legally relegated. Owens, visibly confused, admitted she might be wrong and did not defend her original statement.

Jerusalem's Old City has historically been divided into four quarters - Jewish, Christian, Armenian, and Muslim. The population of the Old City was mixed until the 1929 anti-Jewish riots, which led to the expulsion of the Jewish community. Between 1948 and 1967, there were no Jews in the Old City due to a mass expulsion following Israel's War of Independence. Today, the population is diverse, consisting of Jews, Muslims, and Christians.
