In a move that further solidifies Texas' stance on COVID-19 vaccine mandates, Governor Greg Abbott has signed a law prohibiting private employers from requiring their employees to get vaccinated.

The law, known as Senate Bill 7, was signed on Friday and imposes a hefty fine of $50,000 on employers who fail to comply.

In a press statement, Governor Abbott explained the implications of the new law. "This law adds to the law that I already signed that prohibits state and local governments from imposing COVID mandates," he said. "It’s long past time to put COVID behind us and restore individual freedom to all Texans. I thank Senator Middleton, Representative Leach, and all other members of the Texas Legislature who stood with this issue every step of the way.”

The signing of Senate Bill 7 comes after a celebratory tweet from Abbott in late October, following the bill's successful passage through both the Texas Senate and House. The governor had identified the ban on private employer vaccine mandates as a top priority during Texas' third special legislative session.

The original sponsor of Senate Bill 7, Texas State Senator Mayes Middleton, initially proposed a $10,000 fine for non-compliant employers. However, the Texas House raised the fine to $50,000 before the bill was passed.

Before the bill was signed into law, Middleton hailed it as “the strongest ban on COVID vaccine mandates in the nation” in a post on social media.

The Washington Examiner reports that the new law will also apply to unpaid employees, health clinics, and doctor’s offices. Despite the ban on vaccine mandates, employers are still legally permitted to require unvaccinated staff members to take other precautions, such as wearing masks.

Earlier this year, Governor Abbott signed a similar law that prevents any government entity in Texas from implementing COVID-19 vaccine mandates. This latest law extends that prohibition to the private sector, reflecting the state's commitment to individual freedom and personal choice in health matters.
