The Marine Corps is currently conducting an investigation into a recruiter who may have been involved in an inappropriate relationship with a potential recruit, as revealed in his self-published memoir.

Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Champagne, 36, detailed the story in his book, referring to it as a "scandalous romantic relationship" with a "young woman" interested in joining the military. It is suggested that the woman may have been a minor at the time, as she had to obtain parental consent to be recruited.

Concerns have been raised about Champagne's suitability as a recruiter. Rob Kersch, Champagne's former father-in-law, expressed his disapproval, stating, "This is not the kind of guy you want recruiting your children." Captain Bryanna Kessler emphasized that Champagne's conduct does not reflect the values of the Marine Corps, and he has been removed from his recruiting position pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Pentagon strictly prohibits recruiters from engaging in romantic or sexual relationships with potential recruits. In light of the investigation, the website featuring Champagne's book has been deactivated.

Captain Kessler assured the public that the young woman, referred to as "Cosette" in the memoir, is not in any danger of further contact from Champagne. Her family has been informed about the ongoing investigation.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is also involved in the case. NCIS spokesperson Jeff Houston stated, "NCIS takes allegations of criminal sexual misconduct very seriously."
