The federal trial of David DePape, the man accused of assaulting the husband of Nancy Pelosi in 2022, commenced with his defense attorney, Jodi Linker, outlining a series of conspiracy theories that DePape allegedly subscribed to, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Linker, representing DePape, asserted that her client's purported actions were influenced by conspiracy theories involving Hunter Biden's alleged corruption, actor Tom Hanks, philanthropist George Soros, and a University of Michigan anthropology professor, as per the Chronicle's report.

Despite DePape's plea of "not guilty" entered in 2022, Linker did not refute the accusations against her client. She acknowledged that DePape will have to bear the consequences of his actions for the remainder of his life.

"This is not a whodunit," Linker declared during the trial, according to the Chronicle. "But what the government fails to acknowledge is the 'whydunit' — and the why matters."

DePape is accused of breaking into Pelosi's residence on October 28, 2022, armed with a hammer and plastic zip ties. When he failed to locate Pelosi, he allegedly assaulted her husband, Paul, with the hammer, leaving him unconscious in a pool of his own blood.

Linker argued that DePape's alleged assault on Paul was motivated by his desire to kidnap Pelosi, whom he intended to use as leverage to expose the government's purported "lies," as reported by the Chronicle. DePape allegedly had a list of "targets," which included Tom Hanks, whom he believed had committed a sexual crime against a minor.

"The lies are insane," DePape reportedly told police officers during his initial interrogation. "People in Washington. It originates with Hillary. Honestly, day in and day out, the person on TV lying every day was [Nancy] Pelosi. It's fucking insane the crime spree the Democrats have been on, persecuting the rival campaign."

DePape has reportedly battled mental health issues and substance abuse for several years. His ex-girlfriend claimed that he believed he was Jesus for a year. Other acquaintances described him as being "out of touch with reality" and harboring delusions of communicating with angels.

"Members of the jury, many of us do not believe any of that. You may think it is all lies," Linker said, referring to DePape's alleged delusions, as reported by the Chronicle. "But the evidence in this trial will show that Mr. DePape believes all these, these things… with every ounce of his being."

DePape is facing a multitude of charges, including attempted murder and first-degree burglary, according to the Chronicle. If convicted, he could potentially face a life sentence for his alleged actions.
