In a recent congressional hearing, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, denied the existence of an illegal immigration crisis at the U.S. southern border.

This statement comes in the face of data showing millions of undocumented migrants crossing into the United States since President Biden assumed office, including over 240,000 last month alone.

Mayorkas' comments were made during his testimony before Congress regarding the budget and expenditure for border security, as well as the unprecedented influx of illegal immigrants into the country.

In the course of the hearing, Sen. Hyde-Smith (R-MS) queried Mayorkas, "So the situation at the border, you're saying, is not a disaster?" To which Mayorkas responded, "That is correct."

This denial from the Secretary comes in the wake of data released by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CPB) last month, indicating that illegal immigration has reached an all-time high under the Biden administration.

According to the CPB, there were a record 2.4 million apprehensions at the US border in the 2023 fiscal year, up from 2.3 million in 2022.

The situation at the U.S.-Southern border has been under increased scrutiny following the Israel-Hamas war. Republican officials have warned that Biden's open-border policies could potentially allow terrorists to infiltrate the country.

Supporting these concerns, CPB data shows that 172 non-citizens on the terrorist watchlist were apprehended at the border in 2023, a significant increase from the previous record of 98 in 2022. Prior to 2021, the highest number was six in 2018, under former President Trump's stringent border policies.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) penned a letter to Secretary Mayorkas, demanding an explanation for the "uptick in potential terrorist-linked illegal aliens encountered at the southern border." He urged Mayorkas to "address this issue immediately to ensure the safety of American citizens, especially Jewish Americans, who are facing increased threats to their physical safety following the Hamas attack."

Hawley further stated, "Illegal aliens with potential ties to terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah have no place in the United States," and called on Mayorkas to "abandon your radical open border policies."

Between October 2021 and October 2022, Border Patrol apprehended tens of thousands of "Special Interest Aliens," classified by the Department of Homeland Security as non-US citizens who potentially pose a national security risk to the United States, such as terrorism or a nexus to terrorism.

This group included individuals from Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, Lebanon, Jordan, Yemen, Iraq, Mauritania, and Uzbekistan, as reported by Fox News.

In the days following the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, Border Patrol apprehended more "Special Interest Aliens," including individuals from Syria, Lebanon, and Iran.

Despite the data, Secretary Mayorkas maintained in his Wednesday testimony that the current state of the US-Mexico border does not warrant concern.
