In a recent exchange, Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, confronted Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas regarding a department employee who had publicly expressed support for terrorists, yet remains in government employment.

On October 7, Hamas initiated a multi-faceted terrorist assault on several Israeli military bases, civilian areas, and a music festival. The Hamas paragliders who perpetrated the murders of teenagers and young adults at the festival have been hailed as symbols of the attack by some, including the Chicago chapter of Black Lives Matter, which posted a graphic of a paraglider bearing the Palestinian flag with the caption "I Stand With Palestine."

Senator Hawley broached the subject of revoking visas from foreign students advocating for the annihilation of Israel and Jewish people. He then read aloud a social media post and sought Secretary Mayorkas' view on the rhetoric.

Hawley quoted, "What about people who say things like, on October the seventh, ‘F Israel’ — I’m cleaning up the language here — ‘F Israel, the government and its military, are you ready for your downfall?’ People who say things like, ‘F Israel and any Jew who supports Israel. May your conscience haunt your dreams until your last breath. Palestine will be free one day. F apartheid Israel,’ This is pretty extreme rhetoric, don’t you think?"

Mayorkas responded by distinguishing between "espousing or endorsing terrorist ideology and speech that is odious." Hawley then revealed that the author of the post was a Department of Homeland Security employee.

"This person works for you," Hawley stated, adding that the DHS employee had also posted a fabricated graphic of a "Hamas paraglider" armed with a machine gun, flying into Israel, accompanied by the caption, "Free PALESTINE."

Hawley questioned Mayorkas about the appropriateness of an "asylum and immigration officer" posting such "pro-genocidal slogans and images on the day that Israelis are being slaughtered in their beds."

Mayorkas rejected the implication of Hawley's question, stating, "Your question to suggest that that is emblematic of the men and women of the Department of Homeland Security is despicable."

Hawley retorted, "I’m sorry, this person works for the Department of Homeland Security, have you fired her?" He continued to press Mayorkas on whether the employee had been dismissed.

Hawley admonished Mayorkas, "Don’t come to this hearing room when Israel has been invaded and Jewish students are barricaded in libraries in this country and cannot be escorted out because they are threatened for their lives. You have employees who are celebrating genocide, and you are saying it’s despicable for me to ask the question? Has she been fired?"

Mayorkas revealed that the employee was currently on administrative leave but declined to comment further on the ongoing personnel matter. He also refused to answer why the social media posts were not grounds for dismissal.

Mayorkas criticized Hawley's "adversarial approach," reminding him that he was the child of a Holocaust survivor and that his mother had nearly lost her entire family in the genocide. He accused Hawley of being "disrespectful of me and my heritage."
