Supporters of President Biden in New Hampshire have launched a grassroots write-in campaign in an effort to prevent him from suffering an electoral embarrassment in the state's first-in-the-nation presidential primary.

This comes after Biden declined to place his name on the primary ballot, as the primary is out of compliance with the Democratic National Committee's 2024 nominating calendar. The campaign, called "Write-In Biden," aims to encourage New Hampshire voters to write in Biden's name during the primary.

The effort is being led by prominent figures in the New Hampshire Democratic Party, including veteran Democratic strategist Jim Demers and former state Democratic Party chair Kathy Sullivan. They emphasize that neither the president's re-election campaign nor the New Hampshire Democratic Party are involved in the campaign.

Demers clarified that the write-in effort had been organizing for weeks before three-term Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota filed to place his name on the state's ballot as a primary challenger to Biden. The campaign's launch was postponed due to the mass shooting in neighboring Maine. Demers stressed that the write-in campaign's goal is to educate New Hampshire voters on their ability and right to write in President Biden's name and how to do so. The campaign has already seen online sign-ups and fundraising contributions. Demers anticipates hiring staff in the coming weeks, but the campaign's filing with the Federal Elections Commission only permits grassroots work and does not allow for digital or direct mail outreach.

The genesis of the write-in campaign can be traced back to Biden's proposal for a new nominating calendar for the 2024 election cycle, which removed New Hampshire from its traditional leadoff position and replaced it with South Carolina. New Hampshire, however, plans to move up the date of its 2024 primary in accordance with state law, putting it out of compliance with the DNC. This led to Biden's decision not to file for the primary ballot. While Biden is the frontrunner for re-nomination, polls indicate growing concerns among Democrats about his age and a desire for new leadership. There are also concerns among Granite Staters that the president's absence from the primary ballot could distract from his campaign in 2024.

In addition to Phillips, Biden is facing a primary challenge from bestselling author and spiritual adviser Marianne Williamson. Environmental lawyer and vaccine critic Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. had also planned to challenge Biden in the primary but recently announced his intention to run as an independent candidate. Phillips, who is being supported by Democratic consultant Billy Shaheen, is expected to spend a significant amount of money on his campaign, posing a challenge to the write-in effort.

Demers expressed his hope that Biden would win the New Hampshire primary through the write-in campaign but emphasized that the goal is to lay the foundation for a winning election in November, regardless of the primary outcome. The write-in campaign aims to educate voters and mobilize support for President Biden, highlighting the importance of citizen engagement in the democratic process.
