Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has reportedly invested a staggering $2 billion in Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) start-up.

Anthropic, often seen as a competitor to OpenAI, the firm behind the well-known ChatGPT, has been making waves in the AI industry.

Dario Amodei, the CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, made a startling admission earlier this week. As reported by the Daily Mail, Amodei stated that AI holds a potential risk of eradicating humanity, with the odds ranging between 10 and 25 percent.

However, during his appearance on the Logan Bartlett Show, Amodei added a caveat to his statement. He expressed his belief that if the negative aspects of AI could be mitigated, the technology could revolutionize various fields, including healthcare and mental health. He said, "If we can avoid the downsides then this stuff about curing cancer, extending human lifespan, solving problems like mental illness… I don't think it's outside the scope of what this can do."

Google's investment in Anthropic is not a one-time deal. The tech giant has already invested $500 million, with the remaining funds to be provided over time. This follows a hefty $4 billion investment from Amazon, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The race among tech behemoths to dominate the AI industry is heating up. While Google and Microsoft have previously backed OpenAI, Anthropic has rapidly emerged as a major player. Since Amodei, a former vice president of research at OpenAI, left to establish Anthropic three years ago, the start-up's value has soared to $5 billion.

Despite the potential benefits of AI, Amodei warned of the possible catastrophic consequences. He stated, "[m]y chance that something goes really quite catastrophically wrong on the scale of human civilization might be somewhere between 10 percent and 25 percent." However, he also noted that there is a 75 to 90 percent chance that the technology will be developed without any major issues.

Anthropic, however, is already facing legal challenges. On October 18, Universal Music Group and other major record labels filed a lawsuit against the company for allegedly distributing copyrighted lyrics without a licensing agreement. Jason Peterson, the CEO of GoDigital Media Group, told the Daily Mail that he believes this is a clear case of infringement that the courts will resolve.
