In the race for the mayoral seat of Houston, Texas, Democratic Representative Sheila Jackson Lee is a prominent contender, facing off against state Senator John Whitmire.

The campaign trail heated up recently when Jackson Lee hosted an event in Houston, featuring a notable endorsement from her longtime ally, Hillary Clinton.

Clinton's endorsement of Jackson Lee was hardly a surprise. Both women are seasoned Democrats with deep roots in Washington, D.C., and are seen as part of the political establishment. Jackson Lee's loyalty to the Clintons dates back to Bill Clinton's tenure in the White House, and was further solidified when she endorsed Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama during the 2008 Democratic primary.

On October 18, 2023, Clinton took to Twitter to express her support for Jackson Lee, stating, "I endorse and proudly support my friend, @SJacksonLee, to be the next mayor of Houston. Her relentless efforts in Congress prove she has the experience and vision to lead Houston into the future. She's always been a fierce champion for her constituents, and I have no doubt…"

Despite the recent controversy surrounding Jackson Lee – a leaked recording of a profanity-laden conversation with a staffer – Clinton brushed it aside, suggesting that it demonstrated Jackson Lee's strength as a leader. Jackson Lee, who is known for her demanding expectations of her staff, has often been voted the worst boss on Capitol Hill by those who work there.

In the wake of the leaked recording, several female political and community leaders rallied in support of Jackson Lee at an event in Southwest Houston. Among them were Clinton and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, both of whom reiterated the importance of electing Jackson Lee as Houston's next mayor.

Clinton, who considers Jackson Lee a friend, had previously endorsed her mayoral run. At the rally, she lauded Jackson Lee as a "tireless champion" for affordable healthcare, criminal justice reform, and infrastructure improvement. Clinton acknowledged that Jackson Lee's advocacy on these issues might make some people uncomfortable, but she argued that this discomfort signaled Jackson Lee's commitment to fighting for her constituents, rather than for those who already have everything they need.

The controversy surrounding Jackson Lee escalated when an anonymous source leaked an unverified recording of her allegedly berating a staffer in a profanity-laced tirade. Jackson Lee did not confirm that the voice in the recording was hers, but expressed regret for any distress it may have caused.

The event took an unexpected turn when 23-year-old activist Alex Rosen, who was in the audience, shouted questions at Clinton about her husband's frequent visits to Jeffrey Epstein's island home. The crowd responded with boos and chants of "Sheila." Security swiftly removed Rosen from the room and escorted him out of the building.
