In a recent interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity, newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, outlined his stance on American foreign aid, particularly in relation to Israel and Ukraine.

Johnson, who was elected to his position earlier this week, expressed support for a $14.5 billion expenditure for Israel, but emphasized that the US "cannot be dropping money out of helicopters."

The House Speaker clarified that the proposed funds are "a very specific number tied to very specific measures," and that the money would need to be reallocated from elsewhere in the budget, rather than simply added to existing expenditures.

In the interview, Johnson also voiced his opposition to the deployment of US troops in Israel. He underscored the role of Congress in such decisions, reminding the Biden administration that it is Congress, not the executive branch, that holds the power to declare war.

Johnson expressed his understanding of the threats faced by Israel, stating that the country's "neighbors want to eliminate them." He affirmed the US's commitment to supporting Israel, a long-standing ally, saying, "they tell us when we're in Israel the reason we're able to sustain ourselves and survive is because everybody knows our big ally is America."

The issue of foreign aid, particularly to war-torn regions like Ukraine, has been a point of contention within the Republican caucus. The US has already spent $113 billion in Ukraine since February 2022. Johnson acknowledged these concerns, reiterating that the US "cannot be dropping money out of helicopters," but emphasized the importance of showing support for "nations of free people around the world."

However, Johnson stressed the need for domestic focus, stating, "we have to take care of our own house first."

Reflecting on the Trump administration, Johnson praised the former president's economic policies, attributing the "greatest economy in the history of the world" to Trump's leadership. He expressed concern about the current state of the nation, saying, "I think right now we're in very desperate times – I think the hour is late and the crisis is great."
