King stated that the Raanan family were his supporters and that he had been instrumental in their release. However, the family has since refuted these claims, stating they were unaware of King until after their release.
King shared on Instagram, "Hamas has just freed the teenager Natalie Raanan and her mother. I’m grateful." He further stated, "As I said last week, Natalie and her family have been supporters of mine and protested police violence in America alongside us." He also expressed gratitude to the Qatari government for their role in the negotiation process, adding, "Dozens of us worked frantically behind the scenes to help make this possible."

However, journalist Yuna Leibzon challenged King's assertions in a detailed thread on X. She quoted the Raanan family as saying, "It is important to clarify: we have no idea who Sean King is and we first found out about his existence after our release and reading the posts."

Leibzon also highlighted that King had mentioned Natalie's half-brother Ben in his posts. She quoted Uri, the father of Ben and Natalie, as saying, "I had no idea about this referral, and that the family simply turned everywhere to anyone who could help."

Leibzon further pointed out that King is a "known hater of Israel," while Judith Raanan is a part of the Chabad community and a staunch supporter of Israel. Leibzon suggested that King's objective was to sow "doubts" about the family's allegiances.

Following the spread of Leibzon's report, King released private messages between himself and Ben, and recorded all his conversations with the family.
Natalie and Judith Raanan were taken hostage following a Hamas attack on Israel from Gaza on October 7, which resulted in over 1,300 fatalities. The pair were released on Saturday, but the family confirmed that "eight other family members are still missing in Gaza."
