A recent poll has revealed that a significant majority of New York residents, approximately two-thirds, attribute the ongoing migrant crisis to President Biden's policies.

The escalating situation has sparked concerns over national security, economic implications, and other related issues in the Empire State.

The poll, conducted by Siena College and released on Tuesday, indicated that 64% of New Yorkers are dissatisfied with President Biden's handling of the recent surge of migrants in the state as of October. This figure includes 48% of Democrats, 91% of Republicans, and 72% of independents.

The poll also revealed that 46% of New Yorkers disapprove of New York City Mayor Eric Adams' approach to the migrant influx, while only 30% approve. As for New York Governor Kathy Hochul, her approval rating stands at 37%, with 52% expressing disapproval.

Steven Greenberg, a pollster at Siena College, noted, "While other issues in Washington and abroad have largely driven the news cycle over the last few weeks, the influx of migrants to New York remains top of mind for voters, with 84% saying it’s a serious – 57% very serious – problem for the state."

Greenberg further highlighted the rare consensus across various demographic and political groups, with at least 79% of Democrats, Republicans, independents, men, women, upstaters, downstaters, Blacks, Whites, Latinos, Catholics, Jews, and Protestants all agreeing that the migrant influx is a serious issue.

Greenberg also pointed out a growing sentiment among voters favoring efforts to slow the flow of migrants. "The strong majority of voters last month who said by 22 points that New Yorkers must work to slow the flow of migrants rather than accept and assimilate them, has grown to an overwhelming 35-point majority today," he said. "That view is shared by 82% of Republicans, 68% of independents and 52% of Democrats, as well as two-thirds of downstaters and 59% of upstaters."

Despite the disapproval of Mayor Adams' handling of the migrant crisis, a majority of New Yorkers, 58-32%, including a narrow plurality of Democrats, agree with Adams' statement that ‘this issue will destroy New York City.’ This view is shared by a majority of White (60%), Black (57%) and Latino (51%) voters, according to Greenberg.

Greenberg also noted that despite the current dissatisfaction with Democratic leadership, New York remains a "true blue state," with 49% of voters registered as Democrats and only 23% as Republicans. However, he pointed out that President Biden's favorability and job approval ratings in New York are at their lowest ever. "The good news for Biden is the election is more than a year away. The bad news is there’s more bad news," Greenberg said.

The poll also found that 52% of Democrats would prefer a different presidential nominee in 2024. In a general election scenario, Biden only leads Trump 46-37%, a significant drop from the 61-38% margin Biden won by in 2020. Biden’s lead narrows further to just seven points if Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornell West – who collectively win the support of nearly one in five voters – are on the ballot, Greenberg added.

As of October 16, more than 126,700 migrants have arrived in New York City since last spring, including over 64,100 people who remain under the city’s care. The increasing influx of migrants into New York City, coupled with the ongoing conflict in Israel, has created a dual crisis for the city. Despite the heightened security measures implemented by the NYPD, Mayor Adams has stated that there has been no credible threat so far.

Adams' relationship with President Biden has deteriorated in recent months due to the mayor's calls for more immediate support from federal authorities in managing the migrant crisis. While Adams and Biden did not meet last month during the president's visit to New York City for the United Nations General Assembly, Governor Hochul did secure a deal with the White House to expedite work authorization for Venezuelans.

Despite the controversy surrounding Mayor Adams' strategy of relocating migrants across the state, Governor Hochul has facilitated the process by identifying tens of thousands of job opportunities across various counties for migrants.

The city also plans to open a migrant shelter at Floyd Bennett Field, an airfield in Brooklyn, in the coming weeks. The shelter, designed to accommodate approximately 500 families with children seeking asylum, will feature privacy dividers with locks, according to city officials.
