Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 'Responds' To Republican Rep. Byron Donalds' Bid For House Speaker

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has responded to the news of Republican Representative Byron Donalds of Florida's bid to become House Speaker.

Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter, stating, "Donalds has only served 1 full term in the House. His most recent work involved submitting falsified evidence in an impeachment investigation. These people are not serious." Ocasio-Cortez, currently serving her third term, expressed her skepticism towards Donalds' candidacy.

Donalds, along with several other Republicans, has entered the race for Speaker of the House after Representative Jim Jordan's bid collapsed. Donalds had consistently voted for Jordan, an Ohio Republican, during all three rounds of balloting this week. However, Jordan failed to garner enough support to secure the speakership.

In a statement, Donalds announced his candidacy, saying, "Tonight, I am announcing my candidacy for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. My sole focus will be securing our border, funding our government responsibly, advancing a conservative vision for the House of Representatives and the American people, and expanding our Republican majority."

He emphasized his commitment to prioritizing the American people's interests, ensuring their safety, and making their lives easier. Donalds also expressed his ambition to become the first African-American Speaker, the first Speaker from the state of Florida, and the next Speaker of the 118th Congress.

Representative Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, who did not support Jordan during the three votes, has endorsed Donalds. Diaz-Balart tweeted, "@ByronDonalds is an honorable leader and respected by the entire conference. That is why it is a privilege to endorse Byron for speaker." Diaz-Balart's endorsement highlights Donalds' credibility and standing within the Republican conference.
