A group of Republican legislators is advocating for a shift in funding, originally intended for Gaza, to be redirected towards supporting Israel's Iron Dome air defense system.

This system is crucial in intercepting the numerous rockets aimed at the Jewish nation.

The proposal requests the president to "transfer all unexpended balances of appropriations made available for assistance to Gaza" to either the Defense Department or the Foreign Military Financing Program. The redirected funds would then be used for grants to Israel specifically for the Iron Dome short-range rocket defense system.

This proposal is not new and has been suggested previously as well.

Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) stated in a press release, "In the wake of Iran-backed Hamas’s savage attack on Israel...and as Iran-backed Hamas terrorists continue to launch missiles and rockets into Israel, the American people have seen the images of Israel's Iron Dome missile defense systems repeatedly intercepting rockets and saving the lives of countless civilians."

GOP Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri also expressed his concern over the current allocation of funds. He said, "The Biden Administration insists on sending foreign assistance to Gaza, while Hamas steals it to fund weapons to kill Israelis and Americans. Congress must act to redirect these funds to Israel to help restock their critical missile defense systems."

On Thursday, the Senate voted 97-0 in favor of a resolution expressing support for Israel's right to self-defense. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) stated, "We declared in one voice that Israel is our friend, Hamas’s attack is reprehensible, and we will stand with our friends as they defend themselves."

During a recent visit to Israel, President Joe Biden announced a $100 million humanitarian aid package for Gaza and the West Bank. Critics have voiced their concerns over this decision, arguing that the aid will ultimately end up in the hands of terrorists.
