A recent report, attributed to a European intelligence official, has shed light on the likely death toll at the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza, revealing that the figures previously disseminated by Hamas officials were grossly exaggerated.

As previously reported by RedState, Hamas officials began to circulate claims at 7:20 PM (local time) on Tuesday that Israel had targeted the hospital, leading to a minimum of 200 fatalities. Within an hour, the death toll had allegedly risen to 500. However, these figures were immediately met with skepticism.

By Wednesday morning, several videos, including live coverage by the pro-Hamas network Al Jazeera, showed a flurry of rockets being launched in Gaza at 6:59 PM. One of these rockets can be seen malfunctioning, changing direction, detonating, and striking the hospital.

Further evidence absolving Israel of responsibility emerged, with a mobile phone intercept revealing Palestinian Islamic Jihad members discussing the rocket's launch and landing points.

Daylight footage of the hospital provided conclusive proof. Instead of a large crater, which would have been left by an IAF bomb, only a small scuff mark was visible on the ground, while the rest of the damage was caused by burning fuel. Most notably, despite claims of 500 fatalities, only the parking lot was affected, with the hospital itself and the nearby chapel remaining virtually unscathed.

Even before this evidence came to light, there were reasons to doubt the death count provided by Hamas. The reported death toll was inherently implausible. We were expected to believe that within an hour, Hamas had managed to extinguish the fires, clear the debris, and accurately count the number of fatalities resulting from the explosion. This is simply unfeasible, even as a rough estimate.

The most efficient governments in the world would require a week to determine a preliminary number of deaths in such a scenario. Yet, the alleged death toll rose from an initial 200 to 500 within minutes, and within an hour, Hamas was claiming 900 fatalities.

My skepticism was validated on Thursday. According to a European intelligence official who spoke to AFP (France's largest press agency), the actual death toll ranges between 10 and 50.

This should have been apparent to anyone with intellectual curiosity and integrity. Israel is still counting the fatalities from an attack that took place nearly two weeks ago. Why? Because it takes time to recover bodies, identify them, and accurately count them. It was also utterly impossible that the "Palestinian Health Authorities," otherwise known as Hamas, had obtained an accurate death toll within an hour. Videos even showed the fire in the parking lot still burning while Hamas was claiming to know the exact number of fatalities.

Even in the aftermath, Hamas "adjusted" its count to 471, but this figure was also clearly farcical. The hospital's parking lot is relatively small, and even if people were standing shoulder to shoulder, such a death toll would be impossible. In reality, all the people in the vicinity were camping out on a grassy area closer to the hospital's main building. There were fatalities there, but nowhere near 471.

As many suspected, it now appears that Hamas significantly overreported the death toll, with actual fatalities potentially being 50 times lower. Despite this, global press outlets continue to cite Hamas death tolls as authoritative.
