Independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr. has publicly endorsed the idea of taxpayer-funded reparations for African Americans, a move that starkly contrasts with the ambiguous stance of President Joe Biden.

Kennedy's campaign website, under the section "RACIAL HEALING," asserts, “Communities that were specifically targeted for destruction need to be specifically targeted for repair.” The site further elaborates that during the Jim Crow Era, black-owned "banks, businesses, hospitals, schools, and farms were targeted for destruction," which hindered the African American community's ability to accumulate wealth.

Kennedy's proposed solution is to allocate federal funds to rebuild Black infrastructure. He writes, "We must set federal dollars aside to rebuild Black infrastructure." The campaign also suggests that these initiatives would supplement "direct redress payments or tax credits to the descendants of the victims of Jim Crow and other victims of persecution." Kennedy promises to devise methods of providing this redress that are "legal, fair, and win the approval of Americans of all races."

In addition to reparations, Kennedy's campaign also outlines plans for prison and police reform. He pledges to "undo the legacy of the 1994 crime bill that disfavors African Americans" and advocates for "early release" in cases involving nonviolent offenders. Kennedy emphasizes the need for a shift in the prison system's focus from punishment to rehabilitation and calls for "de-escalation" training for law enforcement.

"Kennedy will reorient police to serve, not occupy, Black communities," the campaign states, adding that the federal government will collaborate with localities to transform police culture through "pro-community incentives, training in de-escalation, and cooperation with neighborhood organizations."

Prominent leftist Cornel West, also an independent candidate for the 2024 presidential election, has joined Kennedy in advocating for reparations.

Meanwhile, President Biden's position remains unclear. The White House has indicated that Biden supports a "study" into the feasibility of reparations, but it has not clarified whether he would sign a bill on the matter. This lack of clarity has reportedly caused frustration among far-left members, as reported by the New York Post.
