In the midst of escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas, a congressional delegation from the United States, led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), experienced firsthand the volatile situation in Israel.

The delegation, which included Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), was forced to seek shelter when Hamas rockets descended upon the city.

The delegation was in Israel to meet with government leaders and families affected by the ongoing conflict. However, their press conference was abruptly postponed when the sirens blared, signaling an imminent rocket attack.

Schumer took to social media to share his experience, stating, "While in Tel Aviv today, our delegation was rushed to a shelter to wait out rockets sent by Hamas. It shows you what Israelis have to go through. We must provide Israel with the support required to defend itself."

When the press conference eventually resumed, Schumer recounted their experience, saying, "We also experienced what Israelis experience almost every day. We were having a lunch up in the hotel and the sirens went off. We heard them and we were all rushed into a shelter and had to stay there until the coast was clear. And then a few minutes ago, this press conference was delayed for the same reason."

Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish official in U.S. history and the first Jewish majority leader in the Senate, reaffirmed America's unwavering support for Israel. However, he did not address the controversial statements made by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MI), who have been accused of anti-Semitism and have criticized Israel. He also did not comment on the Biden administration's recent release of $6 billion in frozen funds to Iran, which may have indirectly financed the Hamas attacks.

The delegation met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Tel Aviv, where they emphasized bipartisan support for Israel. Prior to his trip, Schumer tweeted about his Shabbat dinner with his family, signaling his personal connection to the Jewish community.

The ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of over 3,000 people and has resulted in an estimated 150 American hostages held captive by Hamas in Gaza. In response to the escalating violence, the Pentagon is reinforcing U.S. presence in the region. Defense Secretary Llloyd Austin announced the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the eastern Mediterranean.

This is not the first time U.S. officials have been caught in the crossfire. Last weekend, Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) and his family were forced to seek shelter during a barrage of rocket attacks on their trip to Israel. Similarly, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) had to take refuge in a bomb shelter while visiting Jerusalem. These incidents underscore the precarious situation in the region and the urgent need for a resolution.
