In a comprehensive statement, President Joe Biden paid tribute to George Floyd, whose death in police custody on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis ignited a wave of riots and violence that inflicted over $2 billion in damages across the nation.

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, which played a significant role in the protests, has recently faced criticism for its pro-Hamas stance and alleged antisemitism, with its founder even advocating for the elimination of Israel.

In his address, President Biden characterized the widespread riots of summer 2020 as "one of the largest civil rights movements in our nation’s history," which he claimed "inspired the world." This period saw numerous municipalities advocating for the defunding of their police departments, a move that has been linked to a surge in crime in many areas.

Rampant looting became a common occurrence, persisting in cities like San Francisco. The reduction in police presence in major metropolitan areas has led to a decline in businesses, with many stores forced to close due to the escalating violence and crime. These cities have subsequently had to pay approximately $68 million to rioters alleging police mistreatment during the riots.

President Biden lauded his contribution to the defund the police movement, highlighting an executive order he signed that prohibits certain police practices used to pursue and restrain suspects and violent individuals. He urged Congress to pass "meaningful police reform," though he did not elaborate on what this would entail or how it would benefit a country grappling with an estimated 5 million illegal immigrants and widespread crime.

In his statement, President Biden said, "George Floyd should be alive. He should be celebrating his 50th birthday with his young daughter Gianna, family, and friends. He deserved so much more."

He continued, "Today, we join his family to honor his life and legacy. And we remember the tragedy and injustice of his death that sparked one of the largest civil rights movements in our nation’s history and inspired the world."

President Biden acknowledged that Floyd's death exposed the longstanding and pervasive issue of racial injustice in the United States, stating, "George Floyd’s murder exposed for many what Black and Brown communities have long known and experienced — that our nation has never fully lived up to its highest ideal of fair and impartial justice for all under the law."

He recalled a conversation with Floyd's daughter, Gianna, who told him, "Daddy changed the world." President Biden affirmed this sentiment, stating, "Three years after her father’s murder, my answer to Gianna remains the same: he has."

President Biden also highlighted the executive order he signed, which incorporated key elements of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act into federal law enforcement. This order bans chokeholds, restricts no-knock warrants, establishes a database for police misconduct, and directs other measures to advance effective and accountable policing that increases public safety.

He concluded his statement by reiterating his commitment to police accountability and urging Congress to pass meaningful police reform. He said, "George Floyd’s memory reminds us that there is more work to do to redeem the soul of America. Let us recommit to changing hearts and minds while enacting policies and laws that ensure our nation lives up to its founding idea: that we’re all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives."
