Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis, who is also a Republican presidential candidate, has urged for a policy overhaul at the southwest border, which has been grappling with an unprecedented influx of illegal immigrants.

Recent data indicates that thousands of migrants from the Middle East have been detained at the border.

In light of the recent Palestinian attacks on Israel, DeSantis expressed concern that the vulnerabilities of the U.S. borders could be exploited by the nation's adversaries. He stated, "The strongest border security in the world, and yet, this happened to them."

The governor's team cited internal data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as reported by Fox News' Bill Melugin. According to Melugin, thousands of "special interest aliens" primarily from Middle Eastern countries have been intercepted at the U.S.-Mexico border. This information was reportedly corroborated by CBP officials.

The data reveals that between October 1, 2021, and October 4, 2023, approximately 75,000 illegal immigrants from the Middle East were apprehended. This figure includes over 6,000 from Afghanistan, more than 1,600 from Pakistan, nearly 16,000 from Mauritania, over 13,000 Uzbekistan nationals, and an astounding 30,000 Turks.

DeSantis has been critical of President Biden's administration, labeling it as the "critical link" in facilitating human smuggling across the border. He wrote, "Our system spits in the faces of those who respect our laws by allowing illegal aliens to break those laws with functional impunity."

He further added, "The Biden Administration is the critical link in an illegal transnational human smuggling syndicate. Through their soft policies and softer public statements, they have made clear to potential migrants that the door to the United States is open, so long as you are willing to make a harrowing and dangerous journey in the hands of Mexican drug cartels."

DeSantis has pledged to halt "illegal entries" and to construct the border wall "once and for all." He stated, "There are more than 600 miles of the US-Mexico border without an effective barrier to illegal crossings: I will use every ounce of my executive power and political capital to get the wall built."
