In a recent turn of events, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, has refuted claims that she had pledged to back her fellow Californian, Representative Kevin McCarthy, during his removal as Speaker.

The allegations were brought to light during an interview with FOX 11 Los Angeles anchor Elex Michaelson.

Pelosi, in response to Michaelson's query about McCarthy's claims, firmly denied making any such promise to aid McCarthy, a Republican from California, in retaining his position as Speaker. "Not really. I had no promise to him," Pelosi stated to FOX 11. "Our Democratic members made that decision."

Earlier this week, McCarthy was stripped of his Speaker's gavel following a vote instigated by a small group of Republican hardliners, led by Representative Matt Gaetz from Florida. The vote to vacate the chair was supported by eight Republicans and every Democrat, resulting in McCarthy's removal as House Speaker.

In a press conference following the vote, McCarthy pointed fingers at the Democrats for his removal, arguing that they should have voted against the motion to vacate the chair for institutional reasons. He also claimed that he had a conversation with Pelosi prior to the vote, during which she allegedly pledged her support.

However, Pelosi countered these claims, stating that the Democrats had several reasons to vote against McCarthy. She cited the Republican-led impeachment inquiry into President Biden and McCarthy's support for former President Donald Trump following the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol as key reasons. "If you don’t respect the institution then don’t expect us to bail you out," she said.

McCarthy, following these events, has declared that he will not run for Speaker again. He also dismissed rumors of his resignation from Congress on Friday, stating, "I'm not resigning. I got a lot more work to do."

Following McCarthy's removal, Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry, a Republican from North Carolina, temporarily took over the role. One of his initial actions as Speaker Pro Tempore was to evict Pelosi from her private Capitol office, an act perceived by some as retaliation for McCarthy's ousting.

However, several GOP lawmakers have told Fox News Digital that the evictions were not acts of revenge, but rather due to the office being reserved for the immediately preceding speaker. "This was a decision by Speaker Pelosi in getting removed because that is the office for the former speaker," Louisiana GOP Representative Garret Graves told Fox News Digital on Wednesday.

House Freedom Caucus chairman Scott Perry, a Republican from Pennsylvania, echoed these sentiments, stating that the evictions were not acts of revenge, but rather a result of the recent vacancy in the Speaker's office. "So that [place] needs to be reoccupied or occupied by somebody different," Perry said. "That's just the flow of business here."
