In a recent interview on Fox News Channel's "Hannity," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich did not hold back in his criticism of the eight GOP lawmakers who voted to oust Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California from the speakership.

Gingrich branded them as "traitors" and called for them to be primaried and "driven" from "public life."

Gingrich, a longtime Republican activist, expressed his disappointment in the actions of these lawmakers, stating, "From my position as a longtime Republican activist, they're traitors." He further emphasized his disapproval by suggesting that they should be removed from the House Republican conference, saying, "If I were speaker, they wouldn't be in the conference." Gingrich also expressed his hope that Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who instigated the move to oust McCarthy, would be expelled from the conference as well.

The eight Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy from the speaker's post were Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Ken Buck of Colorado, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Eli Crane of Arizona, Bob Good of Virginia, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Matt Rosendale of Montana, and Matt Gaetz of Florida. Despite their actions, Gingrich made it clear that he believes they should prove their loyalty to the Republican Party if they wish to remain in positions of power.

In the wake of McCarthy's removal, Republican Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Steve Scalise of Louisiana have announced their candidacy for the speakership. Gaetz, who played a significant role in the ousting of McCarthy, has indicated that he would be willing to vote for either Jordan or Scalise, stating, "If it's Speaker Jim Jordan or Speaker Steve Scalise, there will be very few conservatives in the country who don't see that as a monumental upgrade over Speaker McCarthy." Additionally, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky has expressed his support for Jordan.
