A Washington DC CVS store has been left virtually empty, following a series of thefts by a group of approximately 45 teenagers.

The Columbia Heights branch of the pharmacy chain has been systematically targeted, resulting in rows of barren shelves, as reported by Fox affiliate WTTG-TV.

Upon entering the CVS, one might mistakenly believe the store is on the brink of closure due to the scarcity of goods on display. Sierra Fox, a WTTG reporter, noted, "The only items in stock are the ones that are locked up." When asked about the most frequently stolen items, an employee humorously responded, "Everything."

Store staff have reported that the group of young individuals regularly pilfer snacks, beverages, and other items. Allegedly, some street vendors are also complicit, paying the teenagers to steal specific items from the store, which are then sold for profit on the street.

The Columbia Heights CVS is currently guarded by a single security officer, a fact that has deterred some customers. Ilana Miller, a regular customer, stated, "It makes me not want to shop there, to be honest. I just go in there and get my prescription and then when I need other things I go elsewhere because there’s nothing there to get."

The issue of shoplifting and organized theft is not unique to this CVS store. Other major retailers, including Rite Aid and Target, have also reported significant losses due to theft. Target recently announced the closure of an East Harlem branch and eight other stores, citing substantial losses.

Gerald Darling, a DC resident, suggested that the high prices at CVS could be a contributing factor to the thefts. He told WTTG, "A lot of people can’t actually afford things in CVS."

While he did not condone the thefts, he suggested that providing more accessible resources for those with low income or no housing could be a potential solution, particularly in terms of personal care items.
