Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez (D) has criticized the city's policies, claiming that they have emboldened criminals and left citizens feeling unheard by politicians.

In an interview with Fox News, Lopez expressed concern over the growing list of pretrial detainable offenses that no longer warrant being held on bond in the state of Illinois. He argued that this has given criminals the confidence to commit crimes without fear of consequences.

Lopez stated, "We see the new law and the cash bail, ending the pretrial detainable offenses lists grow. Things like robbery, burglary, arson, assault, even threatening elected officials like myself, do not warrant being held on bond anymore in the state of Illinois, and criminals are taking note they become emboldened."

Lopez further highlighted his concerns by reposting a video on X that depicted two men attacking and robbing another man in the Bucktown area of Chicago. He pointed out that the actions shown in the video were not considered detainable offenses and did not require bail. Lopez expressed his frustration, stating, "Nothing in this video is a detainable offense & no bail required. #Fail."

During the interview, Lopez emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "Innocent people are being hunted down like prey in the city of Chicago." He lamented the lack of response to the cries for help, stating, "That's exactly what happened to this young man who was just walking home going about his business eating when these two individuals viciously attacked him and the screams, the cries for help have gone unanswered, and we see this pattern repeat itself time and time again."

In response to the escalating crime rates, concerned citizens organized a town hall meeting on Monday night to discuss the issue and potential solutions. However, no Democrats attended the event, leaving many feeling unheard. Lopez, who is a Democrat himself, expressed his disappointment, stating, "Voters are starting to stand up and take notice and realize that when you put people who are socialists or ultra-progressives in office...you wind up with a tone-deaf leadership that doesn't care."

Lopez called for a common-sense approach to address the criminality in Chicago's neighborhoods. He emphasized the need to hold both individuals and parents accountable, particularly in cases involving young offenders. Lopez stated, "To start holding people and parents accountable because oftentimes, these are 12, 13, 14-year-olds who are engaging in this behavior, such as the arm carjacking that is so rampant in the city of Chicago."

Lopez also criticized what he referred to as the "extreme liberal agenda," arguing that it disproportionately affects black and brown residents. He claimed that the victims of heinous crimes committed by repeat offenders are often from these communities, despite the claims of care from white liberals. Lopez stated, "I think it's racist because oftentimes the victims of the most heinous crimes by the most by the repeat offenders are those same black and brown residents that the white liberals claim to care about. But truly don't."
