Riley Gaines, a renowned former college swimmer, recently challenged Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) over her claim to be a defender of women.

This occurred following Ocasio-Cortez's criticism of Chris Christie during the second Republican primary debate for his attack on President Joe Biden's support of teachers' unions. Christie had accused Biden of being "in bed with a member of the teachers' union," echoing a statement Biden himself made two years prior.

Ocasio-Cortez took offense to Christie's comment, branding it as "disgusting, misogynistic," and a surefire way for Republicans to "continue pissing off an entire nation of women." She confidently added, "We'll see you at the ballot box."

Gaines, a staunch advocate for women and fairness in sports, questioned Ocasio-Cortez's self-proclaimed status as a champion of women's rights. She pointed out that Ocasio-Cortez had voted against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act and supported amendments to Title IX that would permit biologically male trans women to participate in women's sports.

Gaines retorted, "Is this the same AOC that said upholding Title IX as it was intended is 'indefensible and embarrassing'? Because surely the person saying women don't deserve equal opportunities wouldn't call someone else a misogynist without first claiming to be one herself."

She further argued that Ocasio-Cortez's actions contradicted her words, stating, "AOC doesn't care about women's safety, privacy, equal opportunities, or dignity as made clear by her vote on HR 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act."

Gaines went on to label Ocasio-Cortez's actions as the epitome of misogyny, highlighting her "nay" vote on the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.

Earlier this year, the Biden administration proposed a rule allowing schools to prevent trans athletes from competing on sports teams to uphold rights under Title IX. The rule, which was met with criticism from activists on both sides, aimed to maintain fairness by preventing biological men from competing against biological women in high school and collegiate sports.

Ocasio-Cortez, however, labeled the rule as "indefensible," "embarrassing," and a "disgrace." Despite her opposition, the House passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act this spring, although it was subsequently defeated in the Senate.
