The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is reportedly distributing talking points, developed by a left-leaning think tank, aimed at countering a potential third-party presidential bid in 2024.

The move comes amid growing apprehension that such a bid could jeopardize President Joe Biden's chances of re-election, as per documents reviewed by CBS News.

The third-party group, No Labels, is said to be considering a presidential run and has reportedly approached Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, although his intentions remain unclear. Local Democratic leaders have been circulating an email containing directives from the DNC, sourced from the left-of-center think tank, Third Way. The instructions call for a strong denouncement of third-party tickets by any means necessary, CBS News reports.

A Utah Democratic Party official was quoted saying, "We need to do everything we can to stop this effort NOW, and not wait until they name a ticket and this becomes a runaway train." The official further emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, "And right now is the moment to act, while the conventional wisdom on this hasn't hardened yet and we have the opportunity to shape it."

The email also urged Democratic leaders to publicly denounce the potential third-party presidential ticket of No Labels. The suggested methods included issuing a statement on social media, publishing an open letter, or using media appearances. However, the DNC has requested state and county parties to refrain from making public statements about No Labels at this time, although elected officials are permitted to speak out against them, according to an email from a state Democratic official reviewed by CBS News.

Democrats have been publicly opposing third-party efforts such as No Labels and Green Party presidential candidate Cornel West. They argue that third-party runs could potentially lead to the election of Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner, in 2024 due to vote splitting. No Labels has reportedly qualified for the ballot in over ten states and raised nearly $70 million, CBS News reports.
