In a recent conversation with comedian Bill Maher on his podcast, Democratic strategist James Carville issued a stark warning to the Democratic Party regarding President Joe Biden's prospects for re-election.

Carville's message was unequivocal: "Somebody better wake the f*** up.".

Carville painted a hypothetical scenario of an election held this year, with candidates including President Biden, former President Donald Trump, Senator Joe Manchin, Governor Larry Hogan, and philosopher Cornel West. "Trump would be a betting favorite," Carville asserted. "If I told you I would give you even money, you would not take that bet. All right?"

Carville's cautionary words were met with agreement from Maher, who humorously suggested he might consider the even-money bet, but ultimately concurred, "You're right. I'm totally on the same page."

Maher went on to express his belief that while Biden may have been the only candidate capable of defeating Trump in 2020, he now seems to be the only one who could lose to him. Maher attributed this to the perception that Biden may be too old for the presidency.

"He cannot run for president. He'll look bad in the debates. It's just too much. And he's — I think, going to lose," Maher opined. "He will be Ruth Bader Biden, the Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the presidency. It's not a good look."

Maher suggested that a younger, savvy Democrat could have a better chance at winning. "And any 50-ish, not-stupid woke Democrat with a 'D' by their name — people just vote 'D' and 'R' — that person can win." Carville concurred, adding, "Could win easily. If we had somebody under 60 and ran against Trump, we'd get 55%."

Current polls show a tight race between Trump and Biden, with results often falling within the statistical margin of error. Sometimes Biden leads, other times Trump does. While it's important not to overinterpret polls more than a year before an election, the close results suggest Biden may be a weaker candidate than he was in 2020.

CNN's data expert Harry Enten has pointed out that Biden held a significant lead over Trump in pre-election polls in 2020. The fact that Biden is now struggling to pull ahead of Trump suggests that Biden's position has weakened, Trump's has strengthened, and a potential rematch could be closer than the 2020 race.
