The House Appropriations Committee is focusing on border security and cutting spending in its Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriation bill to address the ongoing crisis at the southern border.

The bill includes provisions to restart border wall construction, increase funding for wall construction by over $2 billion, and allocate the funding within 120 days. Representative Ryan Zinke, a member of the committee, emphasized the importance of curbing spending and removing "woke" funding sources in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Zinke highlighted the significance of the border wall, stating, "Well, primarily it looks about 32 feet tall and about 600 miles long. That's what it looks like." The bill also includes funding for 22,000 Border Patrol agents and border security technology, such as Autonomous Surveillance Towers and Tactical Aerostats. Additionally, it allocates nearly $10 billion to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The bill contains language that prevents funding for "gender-affirming care" for illegal immigrants in detention and restricts programs related to diversity, equality, inclusion, and critical race theory. While the bill will be open to amendments, Zinke expects it to remain largely unchanged after the amendment process.

Zinke expressed skepticism about the Democratic-controlled Senate's reception of the bill, stating, "Looking at what the Senate passed, I don't think the Senate is going to like our bill at all... the Senate in many ways, I think, is too old and too fat on pork to change." However, he emphasized the House's responsibility to pass its appropriations bills and then leave it to the Senate to take action.

The bill's timing is crucial, as a government shutdown looms if funding is not secured beyond September 30. Lawmakers have until then to fund the government or pass a short-term stopgap continuing resolution. Zinke emphasized the importance of the appropriations process over tools like continuing resolutions, stating that Congress must fulfill its duty and make the hard decisions.
