New York City's Democratic Mayor, Eric Adams, is reportedly set to issue a directive mandating the New York Police Department (NYPD) to significantly reduce overtime expenditure.

This move is seen as a strategy to offset costs related to the ongoing migrant crisis, as reported by the New York Post.

The city's budget director, Jacques Jiha, allegedly dispatched a memo on Saturday to various city departments, including the police and fire departments, the Department of Correction, and the Department of Sanitation. The memo indicated that each department would be required to curtail overtime.

"The mayor will … issue a directive to implement an overtime reduction initiative for our city's four uniformed agencies (NYPD, FDNY, DOC/DSNY)," Jiha penned in the memo. "These agencies must submit a plan to reduce year-to-year OT spending."

The memo further directed the departments to provide monthly budget reports to City Hall, with the aim of "tracking overtime spending and their progress in meeting the reduction target."

However, Patrick Hendry, the leader of the Police Benevolent Association, the city's largest police union, expressed concerns over the feasibility of such a directive. He argued that reducing overtime would be a challenging task for the department, given its current staffing crisis.

"It is going to be impossible for the NYPD to significantly reduce overtime unless it fixes its staffing crisis," Hendry stated. "We are still thousands of cops short, and we're struggling to drive crime back to pre-2020 levels without adequate personnel."

Hendry further suggested that if City Hall is serious about saving money without compromising public safety, it should focus on retaining experienced police officers. "If City Hall wants to save money without jeopardizing public safety, it needs to invest in keeping experienced cops on the job," he added.

In the previous year, the city's police department reportedly spent over $700 million on overtime. In a bid to further cut costs, Mayor Adams also plans to enforce a hiring freeze, which will not affect public health and safety positions or "revenue producers," according to the Post. The city has no current plans to implement layoffs to meet the new cost-cutting targets.

The memo also announced a ban on new equipment purchases and future consulting contracts, along with restrictions on out-of-town travel.

Jiha acknowledged that the city's austerity measures would also affect services provided to migrants. "We are also reducing services being provided to asylum seekers and closely monitoring these services to ensure they are being delivered in the cost efficient and cost effective manner possible," Jiha's memo read. "The city is experiencing a humanitarian crisis we did not cause."

Mayor Adams, last week, warned that the surge of migrants "will destroy New York City." He highlighted the city's $12 billion deficit and the impending impact on city services. "We have a $12 billion deficit that we're going to have to cut. Every service in this city is going to be impacted, all of us," Adams said. "I said it last year when we had 15,000, and I'm telling you now with 110,000. The city we knew, we're about to lose, and we are all in this together, all of us."
