In a recent development, Antifa members in Portland have been accused of spreading misinformation regarding the death of a homeless man, William Echols, who was found dead in Gresham on July 29.

The group alleged that Echols was killed by the police, a claim that was later debunked by the Multnomah County Medical Examiner, who confirmed that the 46-year-old man died of natural causes.

The false narrative was propagated after Donna Hayes, Echols' ex-partner, posted on Facebook alleging that a member of her family had been beaten to death by the police. Hayes is related to Quanice Hayes, a 17-year-old who was shot dead by police in 2017 following allegations of robbery while under the influence of drugs and possession of a replica firearm.

Hayes' post, which did not mention Echols by name, stated, "The kops did it again. They took out another one of my family member here in Portland. They beat him to death." The post garnered hundreds of reactions and was shared multiple times.

Several prominent Antifa accounts, including one partially operated by Danialle Inez James, a known far-left activist, echoed Hayes' allegations and called for direct action. "We're about to show up," one account, RisingPDX, posted. "Kops have ... beat to death a member of Quanice Hayes family."

Elizabeth Renee Richter, a recent defendant in a civil trial initiated by Andy Ngo, also seemed to propagate the misinformation. It was only later that night that Echols was identified as the alleged victim of police brutality.

However, the following day, it was confirmed that Echols had died of natural causes. "Investigators spoke to potential witnesses, reviewed surveillance video, and searched Echol's vehicle pursuant to a signed search warrant," the Gresham Police stated. "Detectives learned from the examination that Echols died of natural causes, specifically 'gastrointestinal hemorrhaging.' Detectives determined that the health event caused Echols to fall and hit his head on the ground in the parking lot, which caused the injury to his head."

In the aftermath of Echols' death, his daughter, Alexis, set up a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of her mother, Heather, Echols' ex-partner. Alexis described her father's death as the result of a "sudden unknown medical emergency."

She added, "My dad didn't have a lot to give but he was adventurous, smart, funny, and he loved us the best way he knew how." The funds raised, which have reached nearly $4,500, will be used for funeral and memorial services, with any additional funds going directly to his children.
