In the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia's devastating landfall in Florida's Big Bend region, Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has issued a stern warning against any attempts to loot the properties affected by the disaster.

During a press conference, DeSantis expressed his intolerance for such actions, stating that the state would not stand for any form of looting following the natural disaster.

DeSantis stated, "I've told all of our personnel at the state level, you know, you protect people's property, and we are not gonna tolerate any looting in the aftermath of a natural disaster." He further criticized the audacity of those who would exploit such a catastrophic event, saying, "It's just ridiculous that you would try to do something like that on the heels of an almost Category 4 hurricane hitting this community."

The Governor also cautioned potential looters about the potential risks they face, not just from law enforcement, but also from property owners. "I'd also just remind potential looters that people, you never know what you’re walking into. People have a right to defend their property," he explained.

DeSantis went on to highlight the strong Second Amendment advocacy in the region, warning, "You loot, we shoot. You never know what's behind that door if you go break into somebody's house and you're trying to loot. These are people that are going to be able to defend themselves and their families, so I would not do it."

This is not the first time DeSantis has issued such a warning. Following Hurricane Ian's destruction in Fort Myers last year, he reiterated the same message, "You loot, we shoot." He emphasized the state's commitment to maintaining law and order, saying, "At the end of the day, we are not going to allow lawlessness to take advantage of this situation. We are a law-and-order state, and this is a law-and-order community, so do not think that you’re going to go take advantage of people who’ve suffered misfortune."

In response to the current crisis, DeSantis has temporarily suspended his presidential campaign to focus on leading Florida through this latest natural disaster.
