Former New Jersey governor and Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie has suggested that federal RICO charges could be a viable option for prosecuting Antifa rioters who have organized and participated in events across multiple jurisdictions.

Christie made these remarks during an appearance at radio host Erick Erickson's event in Atlanta, as reported by the Daily Signal.

The discussion arose when Christie was asked about the protests labeled "Stop Cop City" in Atlanta, where rioters caused significant damage to property in the downtown area after the city council approved a training facility for police.

In March 2023, rioters threw Molotov cocktails at construction equipment and police, leading to multiple arrests and charges for financial crimes related to a fund set up to bail out protesters. NPR reported that at least 40 suspects were charged with domestic terrorism, with Erickson highlighting that only two out of approximately 50 arrestees were actually from Georgia.

Erickson suggested that someone must be financially supporting the out-of-state individuals involved in these protests, to which Christie responded, "We need to be more aggressive about this." He further emphasized that the U.S. attorney in Atlanta should take immediate action, as the involvement of individuals from different jurisdictions makes this a multi-jurisdictional issue that falls within the purview of the federal prosecuting system.

Christie specifically mentioned the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act as a potentially appropriate legal avenue for addressing these circumstances. He argued that the organized nature of the rioters and the corrupt activities involved make RICO charges particularly fitting.

In addition to discussing potential legal actions against rioters, Christie also pledged that, if elected president, he would appoint an attorney general who would enforce the law "without fear, without favor, and without partisanship." He highlighted his previous work in New Jersey, where he hired an attorney general and allowed her to operate independently.

Christie also recalled collaborating with Democrats to restructure a county police department, offering to fire the entire department and start anew. The Democrats supported this proposal, and as a result, a new police department was established with 450 new officers trained in community policing and violence de-escalation. Christie proudly noted that, 11 years later, the murder rate in Camden, New Jersey, has decreased by 75%.

Furthermore, Christie boasted about the peaceful response in Camden during the George Floyd riots of 2020. Despite being a city that is "95% black and brown," according to Christie, there were no riots or violence, which he attributed to the effective policing strategies implemented in the area.
