Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund revealed in an interview with Tucker Carlson that his request for National Guard assistance leading up to the January 6 Capitol riot was denied due to concerns over "optics."

Sund explained that the intelligence regarding the storming of the Capitol and potential violence against members of Congress and police officers was not discussed in conference calls leading up to the event.

He further disclosed that Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller and General Mark Milley had discussed locking down Washington DC due to concerns about violence on January 6. However, Sund was not informed about these concerns.

Sund, who was responsible for issuing permits, highlighted that on January 4, Miller issued a memo restricting the National Guard from carrying weapons or civil disobedience equipment that could have been used during the demonstrations or violence on January 6.

When Sund requested assistance on January 6, the National Guard was initially not allowed to respond. Sund mentioned that former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan even held a press conference at the time, pleading to send his National Guard to DC, but his request was denied by the Pentagon due to the memo.

Sund emphasized that the handling of this event by the intelligence agency and the military was different from previous national special security events he had dealt with. He explained that a law passed by Congress in December 2020 required him to seek approval from the Capitol Police Board and congressional leadership in advance to bring in the National Guard or federal assistance. Sund's request for approval was denied twice due to concerns over optics and lack of intelligence support.

As the events unfolded at the Capitol, Sund contacted the Sergeant at Arms, requesting a declaration of emergency and immediate assistance. However, the Sergeant at Arms said he would need to consult with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which was not required under the passed Congress law. Sund then reached out to Mike Stinger on the Capitol Police Board, but received a similar response.

For the next 71 minutes, Sund made 32 calls in an attempt to secure assistance. Finally, at around 2:09 pm, he spoke with two generals at the Pentagon and urgently requested the deployment of the National Guard. However, one of the generals expressed concerns over the optics of having the National Guard on Capitol Hill and suggested keeping Sund's officers in the fight while backfilling their positions. Sund stressed that all his officers were already engaged in the conflict. The general ultimately recommended against supporting the request for National Guard assistance.

During this call, Ashli Babbitt was shot and killed inside the Capitol Building. Sund immediately informed the generals about the shots fired and emphasized the urgency of the situation. The National Guard finally arrived at 6 pm, hours after the initial request was made.
