A House Democrat facing a challenging re-election campaign has expressed pride in her efforts, along with her colleagues, to transform the centrist Blue Dog Coalition into an "antifascist rural" group.

Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a Washington Democrat who co-chairs the Blue Dog Coalition with Representatives Jared Golden of Maine and Mary Peltola of Alaska, made these remarks during a "Postcarding and Conversation" event last month. Gluesenkamp Perez stated that she, Golden, and Peltola are working to rebuild the coalition after it experienced a loss of membership due to disagreements earlier this year.

During the event, hosted by the Downtown Nasty Women Social Group and Markers for Democracy, Gluesenkamp Perez revealed, "So Jared, Mary, and I actually just took over the Blue Dogs. They basically lost some of their membership before we came in, and we are sort of rebuilding it into – Mary, Jared, and I – are rebuilding it into this sort of antifascist rural [group]." It is worth noting that the term "antifascist" is commonly abbreviated to "Antifa" in political discourse today.

These private comments by Gluesenkamp Perez, who won the election to represent Washington's 3rd Congressional District last year, were made just days before the trio of Democrats embarked on a publicity tour to promote the Blue Dog Coalition's purportedly revamped moderate agenda. The Washington Post recently published a profile highlighting the coalition's ambitions under its new leadership, amplifying the trio's message and asserting that they aim to "stage a comeback for moderates" by spearheading a group that has experienced a decline in membership.

In an interview with the Post, Gluesenkamp Perez emphasized her belief that the modern Republican ideology does not serve the trades community and rural communities in the long term. She argued that the Democratic Party historically championed the rights of workers to organize and the dignity of work, values that she hopes to restore. Gluesenkamp Perez stated, "It’s not just about flipping seats for us. It’s about the long work of turning the train around and getting back to place-based politics and not focus-grouped, Twitterati agendas."

Gluesenkamp Perez, Golden, and Peltola are considered vulnerable House Democrats by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). In March, the NRCC identified the three Democrats, along with 34 of their colleagues, as top targets in the 2024 election cycle. Gluesenkamp narrowly defeated her Republican opponent, Joe Kent, in the Washington 3rd District election last November.

Since 2010, the Blue Dog Coalition has experienced a significant decline in membership. Earlier this year, in January, six of the expected 15 members left the group due to internal disagreements. They sought to change the coalition's name to the Common Sense Coalition in an effort to attract more members.

Currently, the coalition consists of 10 House Democrats, some of whom are not considered moderate politicians by present standards.
