A retired Seattle police officer has expressed her frustration with police and city leaders in a scathing resignation letter.

Lt. Jessica Taylor, formerly of the Seattle Police Department, retired on August 1 and chose to forgo the standard exit interview form in favor of a scathing 15-page letter. In the letter, she criticized Police Chief Adrian Diaz, Mayor Bruce Harrell, and the Seattle City Council for allowing the city to descend into "anarchy & chaos."

Taylor accused the police department of being a breeding ground for lies, deceit, favoritism, and rampant corruption. She directed her ire at Chief Diaz, stating that the state of the Seattle Police Department and the city itself is a disgrace.

Taylor blamed the toxic mix of the Seattle City Council's absurdity, the spinelessness of the Mayor, the leniency of the prosecutor's office, and Diaz's failed leadership for the city's downhill slide into anarchy and chaos.

According to Taylor, policymakers in Seattle prioritize politics over the well-being of residents, resulting in criminals running the city. She accused the Seattle City Council of making decisions that defy common sense and basic logic, playing politics, and pandering to radical ideologies instead of genuinely serving the city's best interests. Taylor claimed that their absurd policies have turned Seattle into a playground for anarchists and criminals, with devastating consequences.

Taylor did not spare Mayor Harrell, accusing him of prioritizing political correctness over safety and disregarding the rampant lawlessness on the streets. She also criticized Police Chief Diaz, accusing him of playing political games and manipulating the truth. Taylor called for competent leadership that would prioritize law and order, prosecute those who break it, and prioritize the safety and well-being of Seattle's residents.

Seattle has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including riotous protests, homelessness, and rising crime. The police department is understaffed, leading to longer response times for emergency calls. Taylor's letter highlighted the dangerous understaffing and the toll it has taken on officers and their families. She criticized the mayor, the council, and the chief for creating these unsafe conditions and for leaving officers without a contract for years.

In an interview with KTTH host Jason Rantz, Taylor revealed that her job had taken a toll on her due to a chronic medical condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia, which causes severe facial pain. When the city implemented a COVID-19 vaccine mandate, Taylor sought an exemption due to concerns about potential adverse effects on her condition. However, she was sidelined without pay instead of being granted an exemption.

Despite her problems with the department, Taylor expressed her love for Seattle and her involvement in the community. She has donated her time to help the homeless and volunteer with the Special Olympics. In 2019, she received the Patriot Award from the National Guard for her outstanding support of soldiers.

Taylor's decision to speak out was driven by her desire to share the truth and not remain silent while her colleagues continued to work in the status quo. The mayor's office and city council did not respond to requests for comment on Taylor's letter.

In response to Taylor's criticisms, a spokesperson for the police department issued a statement that did not directly address her concerns. The statement emphasized the department's commitment to restoring the force to over 1400 officers and highlighting the hard work of its officers.
