The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle, Washington, has recently made the decision to remove all references to creator and author JK Rowling from their Harry Potter display in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

This decision comes as a result of what the museum describes as Rowling's "problematic" beliefs.

In a blog post titled "She who must not be named," published in May, the museum explained their decision by referring to Rowling as a "certain cold, heartless, joy-sucking entity in the world of Harry Potter." The author of the post identified themselves as a "transgender Harry Potter ex-fanatic" and outlined a number of concerns regarding Rowling's views.

These concerns include her alleged support of antisemitic creators, the use of racial stereotypes in character creation, the lack of diversity in the wizarding world, fat-shaming, the absence of LGBTQIA+ representation, and a perceived tolerance of bigotry and exclusion. The author of the blog post emphasized that Rowling's transphobic viewpoints are particularly troubling.

The blog post also addressed the decision to retain Harry Potter artifacts in the museum's Fantasy gallery. The author explained that the intention was to acknowledge the work of the actors, prop makers, and costume designers involved in the franchise.

However, in light of the concerns surrounding Rowling, the artifacts are displayed without any mention or image of the author. The author of the blog post noted that the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame, of which Rowling is a member, existed prior to MoPOP and includes other inductees with questionable pasts.

The decision to remove Rowling's artifacts from the gallery is described as a temporary measure aimed at minimizing her impact. The museum's curators recognize that it is not a perfect solution but have committed to adding context to creators and content through their blog and potentially through in-gallery QR codes.

It is worth noting that Rowling was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018, before she began expressing her views on gender and women's rights. Her first viral post on the issue was in 2020, in which she criticized the use of the term "people who menstruate" to describe women. In subsequent posts, Rowling defended the importance of recognizing biological sex and expressed concern about the erasure of women's experiences.

Despite her initial show of support for the transgender community, Rowling has faced accusations of being transphobic. Last summer, MoPOP organized a drag-themed summer camp for boys aged 12 to 18, where they could explore the art of drag and develop their own personas. The camp aimed to teach participants about hair and makeup techniques and help them develop stage presence.

MoPOP's decision to remove references to JK Rowling from their Harry Potter display reflects a growing trend of distancing from individuals whose views are deemed problematic. The museum's commitment to providing context and fostering dialogue through their blog and potential in-gallery QR codes demonstrates their dedication to addressing these concerns in a thoughtful and educational manner.
