Former policy official in the Obama White House and MSNBC medical contributor, Kavita Patel, appeared on "José Díaz-Balart Reports" to advocate for the return of mask-wearing amidst rising COVID-19 cases.

Díaz-Balart highlighted the increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, stating that while the numbers are not as high as before, it is still a cause for concern.

According to the CDC, there were 8,035 hospital admissions for COVID-19 between July 16 and July 22 in the United States. The majority of these hospitalizations were concentrated in areas near the southern border of Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, Mohave County in Arizona, four counties in southern Nebraska, northeastern Oregon, and Colquitt County in Georgia.

Patel, a strong proponent of vaccine mandates, acknowledged that the current rise in cases is not as dramatic as in previous years due to a large portion of the population being infected or vaccinated. However, she emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and keeping people on alert.

Patel urged the public to continue wearing masks, especially in crowded spaces, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. She highlighted the fact that many people may be asymptomatic carriers and masks can help reduce transmission. Patel specifically mentioned the upcoming school season and the need to prevent children from missing school due to preventable illnesses.

However, the argument for mask-wearing, particularly among children, has faced criticism. Despite claims about the well-being of children, studies have shown that children have a minimal risk of severe illness from COVID-19, even during the early stages of the pandemic. Additionally, studies have questioned the effectiveness of masks in preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses.

A comprehensive analysis led by Oxford epidemiologist Tom Jefferson, published in January, concluded that wearing masks in the community likely has little to no impact on reducing the spread of influenza-like illness or COVID-19. Jefferson stated that there is still no evidence to support the effectiveness of masks during a pandemic.

Even the Centers for Disease Control's own peer-reviewed journal, Emerging Infectious Diseases, published a study in May 2020 that found no significant reduction in influenza transmission with the use of face masks. The researchers concluded that there is limited evidence to support the effectiveness of masks in preventing influenza virus transmission.

Early in the pandemic, Dr. Michael Klompas of Harvard Medical School's department of population medicine and others noted in the New England Journal of Medicine that wearing masks outside of healthcare facilities offers little to no protection from infection. They argued that the widespread desire for masking is driven by anxiety rather than scientific evidence.

Dr. Brendan Jackson, the CDC's COVID-19 incident manager, recently stated that the CDC currently has no plans to encourage widespread masking again.
