Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is facing accusations of misleading a judge during a recent plea hearing in Delaware.

The plea deal, which was rejected by Judge Maryellen Noreika, covered Hunter Biden's tax issues, drug use, and a gun charge. During the hearing, Judge Noreika questioned Hunter Biden about his professional credentials and bar standing.

When asked if he was a member of the bar, Hunter Biden responded, "Yes, Your Honor. District of Columbia & Connecticut, Your Honor." However, records from Connecticut reveal that Biden was suspended from practicing law in the state over two years ago due to non-payment of his annual fees since 2018. He has not been reinstated and is currently not in good standing, according to the Connecticut Judicial Branch spokesperson.

The discrepancy was first noticed by Connecticut lawyer and columnist Kevin Rennie, who brought attention to the matter on his blog, Daily Ructions. According to Judicial Branch spokesperson Melissa Farley, Hunter Biden has failed to register or comply with the Statewide Grievance Committee's Minimum Continuing Legal Education requirement since 2018 and has not paid the Client Security Fund fee for 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. No disciplinary action has been taken against him.

Hunter Biden, a Yale Law School graduate, was admitted to practice in Connecticut in 1997. Like other lawyers in the state, he is required to make an annual $75 payment to the Client Security Fund, which provides reimbursement to individuals who have suffered financial losses due to the dishonest conduct of an attorney. The fee is imposed on judges, referees, and administrative law judges as well. Attorneys are reminded via email that the fee is due each year on or before June 15th.

Kevin Rennie, who voted for Biden in 2020, called Hunter's statement to the judge "extraordinary" and claimed that he had misled the court. Rennie stated, "A lawyer who is asked under oath where he is admitted to practice and does not include in his response that he is suspended from practice in one of them has misled the court. He did not give her an answer that, I think most judges would see under these circumstances, was in good faith. It omitted crucial facts."

Rennie also expressed surprise that Hunter Biden, given his legal representation and assumed legal fees, had not ensured that his obligations were met. He emphasized that the fee in question was only $75 and that the Judicial Branch is diligent in reminding lawyers of the payment deadline.

In contrast to his suspended status in Connecticut, Hunter Biden's registration with the Washington, D.C. bar indicates that he is currently in good standing there.

The allegations of misleading the court raise questions about Hunter Biden's credibility and adherence to legal obligations. The failure to disclose his suspended status in Connecticut during the plea hearing has drawn criticism and scrutiny. As the son of the President, Hunter Biden's actions and statements are subject to heightened scrutiny, and this latest revelation adds to the ongoing controversies surrounding his business dealings and personal conduct.
