A proposal by a House Democrat to remove the terms "husband" and "wife" from federal law and replace them with "spouse" has ignited a heated discussion among lawmakers from both sides of the aisle.

Republican Kentucky Rep. James Comer criticized the proposal, stating, "I think that some of the wokeness here in Congress is laughable." He accused Democrats of prioritizing a "woke agenda" instead of focusing on issues such as job creation and border security. Comer characterized the proposal as another example of "far-left overreach of government."

Democratic Virginia Rep. Don Beyer acknowledged that while he personally uses the terms "husband" and "wife," he respects the preferences of others. "I think it depends on who you are," Beyer said. "If somebody does list their pronouns, then, okay, I respect that."

She expressed her frustration, stating, "They want to take away women. They want to call it 'pregnant moms.' You're like a pregnant person. You're not a mother anymore."

Republican Rep. Chris Stewart of Utah questioned the need for such changes, stating, "Why would anyone make that something that would be divisive, rather than just 'this is my husband' or 'this is my wife'?" He argued that these terms are endearing and widely understood.
