A former "Teacher of the Year" in California is facing new allegations of child sex crimes after being accused of sexual misconduct involving a second child.

Jacqueline Ma, who was arrested in March on charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a child and oral copulation, has now been hit with additional charges.

The San Diego County District Attorney's Office revealed on Wednesday that Ma is facing charges related to the sexual abuse of a second alleged victim. The amended complaint includes charges such as lewd acts upon a child, contact of a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense, and employment of a minor to perform prohibited acts.

If convicted of all 19 felonies, Ma could face "10 years plus 150 years to life in state prison," according to the DA's office. She is currently being held at the Las Colinas Women's Detention Facility with no bail.

Ma, who was previously honored as the "Teacher of the Year" at Lincoln Acres Elementary in National City, California, is accused of committing sex crimes against the first victim between December 2020 and March 2023. The allegations include grooming a 13-year-old former student, exchanging illicit photographs, and engaging in sex acts with the teen.

Deputy District Attorney Drew Hart described Ma's behavior towards the first victim as "obsessive, possessive, controlling, and dangerous." Evidence found in Ma's possession, such as a photograph of the boy, jewelry with his initials, and love letters in her classroom, further supported the allegations.

The investigation into Ma began after the parent of the 13-year-old suspected an inappropriate relationship between Ma and their child. The second victim alleges that the sexual abuse occurred in February 2020, but it has not been confirmed whether the second victim was a student of Ma's. Prosecutors did mention that one of the offenses allegedly took place in a classroom.

Ma, 34, pleaded not guilty in court on Wednesday. The judge denied her bail, and she remains in custody. Her next court appearance is scheduled for September 21.

Ma was recently named one of the "Teachers of the Year" for the 2022-2023 academic year. In a previous statement, she expressed that she considers the relationships she maintains with her students as her greatest accomplishments.

The charges against Ma are serious and carry severe penalties if convicted. The case highlights the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring that educators are held accountable for their actions. The legal process will continue to unfold as Ma awaits her next court appearance.
