Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been ordered by a federal judge in Delaware to actively seek employment and adhere to a set of conditions to avoid jail time.

U.S. District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika laid out these conditions as part of an ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden's failure to pay over $100,000 in taxes from his income of more than $1.5 million in 2017 and 2018.

The judge's conditions include abstaining from drugs or alcohol, submitting to random drug testing, and not possessing a firearm. These conditions were set after a plea deal between Hunter Biden and prosecutors fell apart during a court hearing. Judge Noreika raised concerns about the terms of the agreement and her role in the proceedings, leading to the collapse of the deal.

The plea deal also involved a separate gun charge against Hunter Biden, who has been accused of possessing a firearm in 2018 as a drug user. If he adhered to the terms of the agreement, the gun charge would have been wiped from his record. However, failure to comply could result in a felony charge carrying a potential 10-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors have stated that Hunter Biden remains under active investigation, but no further details have been revealed. In the meantime, he has pleaded not guilty to the tax charges.

The collapse of the plea deal was an unexpected turn of events in the long-running investigation. The resolution had been carefully negotiated over several weeks, with extensive discussions between Justice Department prosecutors and Hunter Biden's attorneys. The plea deal aimed to avoid a trial and provide clarity for Hunter Biden.

However, Republicans have criticized the collapsed proceedings, claiming that Hunter Biden received a favorable deal compared to former President Donald Trump, who they believe was unfairly targeted. House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, commended Judge Noreika for refusing to approve the plea deal and called for it to be discarded.
