The Chino Valley Unified School District Board of Education's new policy regarding parental notification for transgender students has sparked controversy and even death threats against the board President, Sonja Shaw.

The policy, which was adopted with a 4-1 decision, requires school staff to notify parents within three days if a student identifies with a gender that does not align with their biological sex, uses different pronouns or a different name, or chooses to use facilities that do not correspond with their biological gender.

President Sonja Shaw revealed that she received a death threat through an anonymous phone call the day after the policy was adopted. The caller explicitly stated their intention to kill her and dismember her body. Shaw expressed gratitude for the swift response from the local police department.

In addition to the phone threat, she discovered her district email flooded with threatening messages, including ones that mentioned harm to her children and animals. Shaw also mentioned that members of ANTIFA had declared war on her.

This incident occurred shortly after Shaw dismissed California State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, who had attended a school board meeting to voice his objections to the policy. Thurmond raised concerns that the policy might violate privacy and safety laws, potentially putting students at risk if they are not in supportive home environments.

Shaw, who was elected to the board in November 2022 and is a mother of two Chino Valley students, explained that the previous policy was designed to keep transgender identities a secret. However, she and other board members felt the need to make changes. Shaw emphasized the importance of protecting children from potential harm and described the policy as a necessary safeguard. She accused Sacramento of attacking parental rights and claimed that Thurmond had been targeting the district for some time.

Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, criticized the Chino Valley Unified School District for their decision, stating that the board members prioritized breaking the law over educating students. Newsom's office has been involved in another dispute with the Temecula Valley Unified School District, where conservative board members refused to adopt state-approved materials for their students.
