Initially, Gee's body was transported to her hometown of Roseville, California, where a ceremony was held in her honor. However, the family was then informed that they would be responsible for the financial burden of moving her body to Arlington, where she would be laid to rest permanently.

Mills' office revealed that the Department of Defense was able to refuse payment for the transportation of Gee's body due to a modification made to the National Defense Authorization Act last year, as reported by Fox News. The amendment specifies that the secretary of defense may grant a waiver for commercial air travel to transport the remains of a fallen military member who dies within a theater of combat operations.

Expressing his dismay, Mills stated, "Typically, our fallen heroes are flown back home for a solemn service and then laid to a final rest at Arlington Cemetery with the utmost respect and honor."
