The White House is facing scrutiny over its response to allegations of President Joe Biden's involvement in his son Hunter Biden's overseas business ventures.

Despite Biden's repeated claims that he had no involvement in his son's business dealings, the White House has consistently supported these assertions. Last year, when asked by Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy if the president and his administration stood by the defense that Biden never discussed Hunter's business affairs, then-press secretary Jen Psaki responded affirmatively. This narrative has been reiterated on numerous occasions.

However, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre deviated from this stance on Monday. When posed with the same question as Doocy had asked Psaki, Jean-Pierre initially claimed that her answer would remain the same. However, she then proceeded to offer a different response.

"The president was never in business with his son," Jean-Pierre stated.

This answer, which Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) believes was carefully crafted by a lawyer, does not definitively address the allegation that Biden may have been involved in Hunter's business dealings, such as being present during phone calls or introductions to partners. As New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker pointed out, Jean-Pierre's response does not eliminate this possibility.

Furthermore, it is questionable how Jean-Pierre can speak with certainty on this matter unless she has directly discussed it with President Biden. Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner noted that Jean-Pierre had previously maintained that she had not spoken to Biden about the situation.

Interestingly, Jean-Pierre has been redirecting questions regarding the allegations to the White House counsel's office. However, she did not do so on Monday, raising further questions about the White House's handling of the issue.

Meanwhile, Devon Archer, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, is expected to testify this week that Biden directly discussed Hunter's business dealings with his son on at least two dozen occasions. This testimony adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing controversy surrounding the president's alleged involvement in his son's business ventures.
