Erie, Pennsylvania Mayor Joe Schember is making a concerted effort to collect tens of thousands of dollars owed by former President Donald Trump before his upcoming rally in the city.

The $35,000 debt stems from expenses incurred during a Make America Great Again rally held at Erie Insurance Arena on October 10, 2018. The funds were intended to cover the costs of city workers and police officers who were assigned to the event and worked overtime. Despite previous attempts to collect the payment, the city has received no response from Trump's campaign committee.

Mayor Schember expressed his determination to pursue the outstanding payment, stating, "I think we have to try, and I feel like my team feels the same way. We're going to see whether we can get some payment from them in advance this time. It's important to do this because we're talking about taxpayer money being used to help make his visit more safe."

Erie is not the only city that has faced difficulties in receiving payment from Trump and his campaign for hosting rallies. Similar situations have arisen in Waco, Texas, Des Moines, Iowa, and Manchester, New Hampshire. Despite the Trump campaign's reported $35.4 million on hand at the time of Erie's reimbursement request, the city received no payment.

Referring to a recent filing with the Federal Election Commission, Mayor Schember pointed out that Trump's campaign currently has $22.5 million available. He emphasized, "Trump has been able to bring in millions of dollars for his campaign. He should be able to easily pay these costs to cities."

In June, The New York Times reported that the former President has been diverting funds from his re-election campaign to cover mounting legal bills resulting from tax fraud charges brought by a Manhattan grand jury and a federal court case in Florida involving stolen government documents.
