Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., faced backlash on social media after she tweeted on Monday evening that the Earth had experienced its hottest day in 120,000 years.

Omar used the tweet as an opportunity to call for a "climate emergency" declaration, claiming that the record for the hottest day ever had been broken on three separate occasions. However, her tweet was met with skepticism and was even tagged with a Twitter community note questioning the validity of her claim.

Former White House adviser Stephen Miller responded to Omar's tweet by asking, "What was the temperature of the globe at 12pm GMT on July 1st, 116,539 BC?" Republican Utah Senate candidate Trent Staggs also chimed in, questioning whether Omar's tweet was meant to be satire.

Omar's claim seems to have originated from a report by local Florida outlet WFLA-TV, which stated that the Earth had broken a record for its hottest day in 120,000 years on consecutive days. The report cited the Climate Reanalyzer dashboard maintained by the University of Maine's Climate Change Institute as its source. However, the dashboard itself warns that the data it compiles should not be considered "official" observational records.

Furthermore, the report acknowledges that weather record-keeping only began in the 1800s and that data from before that period is based on various proxy data sources, such as tree rings, ice cores, and ocean sediments. Conservative commentator Greg Price pointed out the historical inaccuracy of Omar's claim, stating that the first thermometer was invented in 1593 by Galileo and the first modern thermometer in 1714 by Gabriel Fahrenheit.

Other commentators, such as Dinesh D'Souza and Matt Walsh, also challenged Omar to provide evidence for her claim by asking about the Earth's temperature in specific time periods thousands of years ago. Their remarks highlight the implausibility of having precise daily temperature records dating back 120,000 years.

Jeremy Redfern, a spokesperson for Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, criticized the call for a "national climate emergency," dismissing it as an excuse to push a left-wing agenda. While President Biden has made combating climate change a priority, he has not yet declared it a national emergency. Such a declaration would grant Biden the power to bypass Congress and implement regulatory measures typically outside the White House's authority.

In July 2022, there were reports that President Biden would issue a climate emergency declaration, but instead, he opted to issue executive orders addressing the "climate crisis" without going as far as declaring an emergency. Critics argue that declaring a national emergency for an international problem is not a solution, citing the example of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Benji Backer, founder of the American Conservation Coalition, responded to Omar's tweet by stating that declaring a national emergency might gain attention on social media but does not offer a real solution.

While Rep. Omar's tweet sparked controversy and skepticism, it also highlights the ongoing debate surrounding climate change and the appropriate measures to address it. As the conversation continues, it is essential to rely on accurate and verifiable information to inform policy decisions and public discourse.
