A self-proclaimed member of Antifa, who allegedly stabbed a black conservative journalist during the 2020 Portland riots, has been sentenced to probation for the attack.

Blake D. Hampe, now 46 years old, was captured on video stabbing Andrew Duncomb, 28, near a federal courthouse in the early hours of July 25, 2020, according to court documents cited by OregonLive.

Under the terms of the plea deal, Hampe pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree assault. Multnomah County Circuit Judge Heidi Moawad ruled that Hampe will be under her supervision for three years and is prohibited from possessing weapons or participating in unlawful assemblies or riots during that time. However, he is allowed to attend lawful demonstrations.

Hampe's criminal history includes a conviction for possessing child pornography in federal court in Maine in 2008, as stated in court papers.

Video footage of the attack shows Duncomb questioning Hampe, "Hey buddy, why are you following us?" before Duncomb falls backward in pain. OregonLive reported that the knife entered Duncomb's back between his rib cage and hip, narrowly missing his spinal cord. He was treated and released from the hospital the day after the incident.

Duncomb, who records videos of demonstrations and political events under the name "Black Rebel," told OregonLive that he believes he was targeted for being a conservative journalist. He expressed his relief that the incident is now behind him and stated that he hopes Hampe can make positive contributions to society.

Defense attorney Alicia Hercher explained that the plea deal was reached after prosecutors acknowledged that Duncomb's injuries were not life-threatening.

During the sentencing hearing, Duncomb's statement, read by the prosecutor, revealed the lasting impact of the attack on his mental well-being. However, he expressed his readiness to move on from the incident, stating that he has healed from many of the mental effects and hopes for a positive future.

Hampe spent approximately three weeks in county jail before posting bail, according to OregonLive.

This case highlights the ongoing tensions and violence that have plagued Portland during the 2020 riots. The sentencing of Hampe to probation raises questions about the adequacy of the punishment for such a serious crime. As the city continues to grapple with civil unrest, it remains to be seen how authorities will address and prevent further acts of violence in the future.
