The son of a Canadian pastor, Nathaniel Pawlowski, made an impassioned plea for international support during his address to the European Parliament earlier this month.

Pawlowski's father, Pastor Artur Pawlowski, is facing the possibility of a 10-year prison sentence after delivering a sermon to truckers who were blocking the U.S.-Canada border last year.

In his speech to the EU Parliament, Nathaniel Pawlowski expressed his desperation and called for help. He lamented the loss of freedom and democracy in Canada, stating, "I would like to stand here and tell you all the things about freedom and democracy that I like, but I no longer know those things. They have been taken away from us Canadians. Canada has fallen."

Pastor Artur Pawlowski has been embroiled in a series of conflicts with authorities in Calgary, Alberta. The troubles began when he ejected police and public health officials from his Cave of Adullam church during an Easter service in 2021, as they attempted to inspect the premises for COVID-19 compliance. Since then, Pawlowski has been arrested five times by the Calgary Police Service (CPS) for continuing to hold services in defiance of a court order.

One of Pawlowski's arrests occurred on a busy highway as he was returning home from church. On another occasion, he was arrested on the tarmac of Calgary International Airport after a speaking tour in the United States. In May, Pawlowski was found guilty of mischief and breaching a release order for delivering a 19-minute speech to truckers who were protesting federal vaccine mandates by blocking the Alberta-Montana border in February 2022.

During his speech, Pawlowski advised the truckers to remain peaceful and urged them not to "break the line" against the government at the border. He was arrested a few days later and spent 50 nights in two separate prisons. Pawlowski alleges that he was abused and humiliated by prison authorities who tried to instigate other inmates to harm him.

Currently, Pawlowski is under house arrest and is awaiting another court date on August 9. He also faces a charge under the provincial Critical Infrastructure Defense Act for allegedly participating in blocking the border crossing, which carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years.

Nathaniel Pawlowski echoed his father's concerns about the erosion of fundamental rights in Canada. He stated, "We no longer have freedom of religion, or freedom of speech, or the right to protest or assemble or associate or express ourselves or have free media or disagree with the government. Anyone who does so is arrested, charged, and jailed as political dissidents." He compared the situation in Canada to growing up behind the Iron Curtain in communist Poland.

The pastor's son has also faced charges himself for a sermon he delivered outside a drag queen story hour at the Calgary Public Library in April. He allegedly violated a municipal bylaw that prohibits protests within 100 meters of a recreation facility or library entrance. The bylaw was passed after another pastor, Derek Reimer, was thrown out of a public library in Calgary for interrupting a drag queen story time event. Reimer was subsequently arrested and jailed for continuing to protest such events.

Nathaniel Pawlowski highlighted the government's use of COVID-19 protocols to enforce ideology, stating, "I myself have been charged for preaching and reading the Bible publicly because the government claims the Bible isn't inclusive and is hateful. This is what the Canadian government is doing to us."

He went on to criticize Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, comparing him to "a modern-day Caligula" and warning against allowing "mad emperors" to run amok. Pawlowski emphasized that these actions were being carried out under the guise of health, safety, and protecting citizens, while stripping away their rights and ushering in tyranny.

Several European Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) invited Nathaniel Pawlowski to address the parliament, including Christine Anderson from Germany and Mislav Kolakusic from Croatia. Anderson had previously rebuked Trudeau to his face in March 2022, accusing him of trampling on fundamental rights and criminalizing citizens who dared to stand up to his concept of democracy. Kolakusic also criticized Trudeau for violating civil rights and subjecting Canadians to a "quasi-liberal boot."

Upon returning to Canada, Nathaniel Pawlowski was informed by customs officials in Montreal that there was a warrant out for his arrest. He expressed apprehension about coming home, recalling his father's arrest at Calgary International Airport in 2021 despite being told there were no outstanding warrants. Artur Pawlowski claimed that his luggage was confiscated and his personal laptop had been accessed by authorities.

Although Nathaniel Pawlowski was briefly detained at the airport, he was later released and informed that his charges were related to an alleged municipal violation. He suspected that the warrant may have been retracted after garnering media attention.

The Calgary Police Service denied having a warrant for Nathaniel Pawlowski and stated that they were not aware of any active investigation involving him. However, Artur Pawlowski expressed his anger at how he and his family were being treated by Canadian authorities, describing them as "monsters" with no boundaries. He vowed that justice would be served and that those responsible would be held accountable.

The Pawlowski case has attracted international attention and raised concerns about the erosion of civil liberties in Canada. As the legal proceedings continue, the fate of Pastor Artur Pawlowski hangs in the balance, while his son Nathaniel fights for justice and international support.
